Addressing customer needs for a comprehensive range of medical devices

In just one week, we at MSP Medical developed five new solutions for customers who felt something was missing from our product range. How did we do it? Find out in this blog.

5 examples of customer requests that led to new products

  1. A high-low motor for an Ergolet patient lift: An MSP customer was looking for a high-low motor for an Ergolet patient lift. Although we did not yet stock this part as standard, we were able to investigate, based on photos and specifications, whether a technically equivalent alternative was possible. It turned out to be the case. Within a few days, a new item was created with an MSP part number and pricing. The first order followed that very same week. A great example of how a customer request can directly lead to a permanent expansion of the product range.
  2. A 3D-printed key for a nursing bed: A healthcare facility had lost the key to a nursing bed’s hand control. Without that part, functions could no longer be properly locked or unlocked. The original manufacturer no longer offered support for this bed, which would have meant the bed would have to be disposed of. We found a solution anyway. We designed a 3D model ourselves and used our advanced 3D printer to produce a suitable replacement made of ABS plastic. This gave the customer a working key to operate the nursing bed again, eliminating the need to purchase a new one.
  3. A similar solution for another hand control: Following this successful solution, we immediately looked further. It turned out there was another hand control with a similar locking mechanism. For this as well, we developed our own MSP variant of the key. This demonstrates that we truly offer custom solutions for medical devices: not just supplying what’s available off-the-shelf, but developing what’s needed.
  4. Front and rear wheels as an MSP alternative: For a Swiss client, MSP developed an alternative to the original front and rear wheels of a patient lift. These wheels proved to be compatible with multiple models. Together with supplier Steinco, we put together a technically equivalent alternative, including the appropriate mounting hardware. For purchasers, this means access to a suitable alternative that allows them to reduce procurement costs for medical devices without compromising on compatibility.
  5. A battery charger with a custom connector: For another client, we developed a battery charger for a shower-toilet chair, including a custom connector. We engineered the technical solution so that the battery charger was functionally equivalent to the original product and could be replaced via plug-and-play.

How MSP adds products to its product range

There is no single fixed process for every request. The approach depends on the product group and the technical complexity. For electronics, such as motors or control boxes, we first assess whether an alternative is technically feasible. For less complex components, such as wheels, fasteners, or plastic parts, there is often more flexibility to put together an equivalent alternative.

We also consider broader applicability. If a part is likely to be relevant to other customers as well, it becomes worthwhile to structurally incorporate it into the product range.

Development, testing and release

Sometimes the work mainly involves research and combination; other times, it involves actual product development, such as with 3D-printed parts. The 3D printer makes it possible to produce even small batches without large purchase commitments.

Before a product is released, MSP verifies that it is technically equivalent and that it does not alter the device’s functionality. Compatibility, MDR compliance, and safety are always paramount. Where necessary, practical testing is also conducted in collaboration with customers.

Adding to the online store

Once approved, the product is processed administratively, tagged with product information, and added to the online store. In this way, a solution developed for a single customer eventually becomes available to the entire customer base. This is precisely where MSP’s strength as a central procurement partner lies: a one-off request is, where possible, transformed into a structural solution that benefits multiple buyers.

MSP Medical as a central procurement partner

We take our customers’ requests seriously and seek out the best solution. Our mission is to carry a complete range of medical devices and spare parts, so our customers can source everything from a single provider. This clearly illustrates what we stand for: helping buyers reduce procurement costs for medical devices, save time, and simplify purchasing through a single, reliable partner.

These examples show that MSP goes beyond simply supplying what is already standard in the shop. Are you looking for an alternative to an original part, or is a product missing from the range? Please contact us.
